| 抄録別表記: | Introducing the theory of symbolic interactionism in the study of stratification is significant, primarily, in that it can bridge the gap between theory and empirical research in the studies. In this paper, the significance of the symbolic interactionist approach is examined in the following four areas: (1) Distributive Justice in Functional Terms and Symbolic Interaction Justification of inequality in terms of functionalism should be considered as a process of symbolic interaction, and so, functional theory of stratification can be elaborated by the complementary use of symbolic interactionist theory. (2) Studies of Stratification in Symbolic Interactionism E.Goffman's study of the moral career of mental patients, and A.L.Strauss's study of the status passage of the dying patient are exellent examples of the study of stratification based on symbolic interactionism. In these studies, we have to notice the concept of the actor's "mobility perspctive", I.e.his definition of the situation. (3) Bridging the Gap between Theory and Empirical Research The studies about awareness and consciousness of stratification have insufficient theory. The results of these studies can be better interpreted from the symbolic interactionist point of view. (4) Japanese Society's Stratification It is necessary to focus on the process of symbolic interaction, especially the differential evaluation, in the comparative study of the Western type of stratification, I.e. social classes, and the Japanese type, I.e."inclined stratification". We can construct the hypothesis that the evaluative standards of the Japanese type are characterized by achievement and particularism. |
