抄録別表記: Causality is the relationship between cause c and result R. Causality is more decisive in natural science than in social science. And epidemiology belongs to either of the sciences. In case of dererministic causality model (Fig. 1), the reverse holds true. But in case of causality in epidemiology, the reverse does not hold true, because they are usually multifactorial in nature, as shown in Fig. 2. Another cause of complication in epidemiological causality is its stochastic nature. For example, infection of tubercle bacillus as evidenced by tuberculin test may or may not cause manifestation of tuberculosis(Fig.3). The occurrence of food poisoning is typically stochastic in nature, and before etiological bacteria were discovered, people deemed it enigmatic. Traditional Japanese medicine explained it by "combination theory" as follows. "Tempura" is not the cause of food poisoning, but when one takes "Tempura" and "Ice water" at the same time, the combination of these food items is pathogenic for men to cause diarrhea(Fig. 4). After the elucidation of bacterial food poisoning, however, the "combination theory" was neglected. But as a model of causality, it still holds true. Only the combination of allergic constitution(C1) and aspiration of cedar pollen (C2) causes asthma. The relationship between stochastic model(Fig.2) and "combination theory" model(Fig.4)is schematically demonstrated in Fig.5. On the other hand, what is called the epidemiological dose-response relationship is graphically illustrated in Fig.7. This type of the model is a special case of "combination theory" model in which first cause(C1) is variable and second cause(C2) is constant.
